Last weekend the weather was perfect (sunny and 70 degrees) for some San Francisco excursions so we decided to begin our weekend at the Marin Headlands. It's amazing that this old military base and recreation area are only a 15 minute drive from our house and the busy city. We began with the intent to do some hiking but the stunning views kept us wanting to drive further into the Headlands. So we decided to explore the place and go back some other time to hike.
The drive starts out with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city....

...and then the roads begins to turn and you get ocean views....

...then you get to explore the ruins from the military base that was closed in 1960. I loved exploring these old ruins....it was like I had power, and a gun, and I could do anything I wanted....because I was in the military.

Towards the end of the drive the road descended to a beach.

We spent about two hours exploring the Headlands and it was FREE! This trip was Brent's favorite trip we've taken so far (mine is still the bike ride) and it was just a 15 minute drive from our apartment. The only thing we didn't get to do was see the lighthouse. I believe it's free but it's only open from 12:30 to 3:00 Sat, Sun, & Mon.
your imagination makes me laugh linds. i can't imagine you in the military for one second.
